Polystyrene Coating

Due to the nature of polystyrene it makes an ideal modelling substrate, being easy to cut either by hand or with computer-aided milling machines, but can also be extremely fragile when handled, transported or used. When the raw polystyrene has been cut or milled to the required shape, applying a suitable coating can both protect the model and apply the finishing colour and appearance.

The Process

Polyurethane and polyurea coatings for polystyrene

Our clients generally use powerful computer software and milling machines to mill the raw block of polystyrene into the finished shape, depending on the size and complexity of the item being milled this will sometimes have to be sectioned or have pre-determined cutting strategies.

When cut, the individual sections will be bonded together to form the finished polystyrene model. The final polystyrene models can be used for virtually any purpose, including:

  • Bespoke furniture
  • Outdoor features

However, as polystyrene is a relatively fragile material, in order to maintain the appearance and longevity of the model a specialised coating should be used to finish and protect.
